If you’re a New York Jets fan, the first three weeks of the season has been nothing but disappointment. Ever since LB CJ Mosely left the field in the 3rd quarter of opening day with the Jets holding a 16-0 lead, the problems for the Jets seemed to just start piling up. Usually a bye week this early in the season is not to the teams liking, but this may be exactly what the Jets need. I’m going to give you my three biggest keys for the Jets to be able to bounce back week 5 with a big road win at Philly.
Number one, get Sam Darnold back healthy. Look, this team is going nowhere without their starting Quarterback. The offense has looked horrendous in the two games he’s been out. So bad they have not even scored an offensive touchdown. The offense has mustered up 3 points in Darnold’s absence and it has not been pretty. Darnold is so vital to this team’s future success and he needs to be out there developing and getting better while forming chemistry with his new teammates, not to mention learning the new system that new HC Adam Gase has installed. You’ve got wonder what this offense is going to look like once Darnold is back, I mean you can only go up from how they’ve looked without him.
A second major key for NY must be getting CJ Mosely, Quinnen Williams, and Jordan Jenkins healthy as well. CJ is the team’s arguably most important defensive piece, showcasing that in week 1 with a returned interception for a touchdown, and 2 fumble recoveries from his MLB position. Rookie defensive lineman Quinnen Williams also had an impact opening day with a forced fumble before having to exit with an ankle injury and has been out since. And OLB Jordan Jenkins nursing a calf injury is arguably the teams best pass rusher. While the defense hasn’t been awful, or maybe just not as bad as the offense, it is still very important the Jets get those three guys back. Jamal Adams is a fantastic player, but he can not play every position. The unit has played hard for DC Greg Williams, and rookie LB Blake Cashman has flashed while filling in for Mosely, but the Jets need their key guys on the defensive side back and ready to go. Oh, and maybe sign a Cornerback?
The final key for this Jets squad needs to be this; Put the first three weeks completely behind and forget about it, and come together as a team and realize they have the talent to make a run, but everyone needs to look in a mirror and ask themselves if they want to put the work in. Of course, getting a lot of their key starters back will help, but it isn’t going to matter unless every man in the locker room is willing to put the work in. An 0-3 hole in the NFL is incredibly tough to dig out from, but it can be done. “We have playmakers, we just need to figure it out” said RB LeVeon Bell. I believe the Jets have some strong leaders in the locker room and the talent to turn it around, but now its time to see what this team is really made of. “It’s a new season when we get back “, said All-Pro S Jamal Adams, and that needs to be the mindset of everyone wearing green and white.
