Alright well that round robin didn’t go as planned now did it? Pumped by the Flyers, lit up by the Lightning and just disgraced by the Capitals for
last fourth place going into the Playoffs. For the first time (and likely the last) in NHL history the President’s Cup winners are the fourth seed in their own Conference. You cannot make that shit up. The Bruins looked TERRIBLE. It looked like nobody wanted to be out there playing these games. All of our passes were either way ahead or way behind. The only tape to tape passes we saw were to guys in opposing sweaters. Defense was optional at best, nobody partook. Offense had glimpses of talent and hope but so does my Tuesday night men’s league so I wouldn’t put too much weight in that and goaltending was lackluster but I don’t hold goaltenders accountable for that because its almost impossible to perform when literally no one else is.
It’s right about here that you’re probably wondering to yourself “Dotts, you’re the Bruins blogger and their biggest advocate/fan, how could you be saying all this right before the playoffs?!” I’ll tell you how, one key stroke at a time because good teams know when they’re playing well but great teams know when they’re dog shit and every single member of the Boston Bruins has admitted that the Round Robin was awful and they’ve put it behind them. That’s what winners do, they move forward. This core group knows what it takes to win and knows that it doesn’t just fall into your lap. The fact that these teams need to stay in this “bubble” atmosphere away from their family and friends during what’s typically the off-season should only throw logs on the fire for the boys.
Let me be very clear about this; Carolina is NO JOKE. They are the real deal when it comes to young, talented and motivated teams that are RED HOT right now. They were on fire last year when they ran into the B’s in the Eastern Conference Finals last year who were just as hot with more experience and a better understanding of how to handle themselves on the biggest stage. The experience of losing that series now only helps Carolina in two ways: 1) They’ve been there before and know what it feels like to have a lead, have to chase and how to handle the high pressure on the big stage. 2) Revenge is a dish best served on ice. They want this matchup and they want to settle the score (literally) from last year and make their mark on the league as a team to be taken VERY seriously.
This series is going to come down to two big factors. The first one is going to be goaltending. Mrazik in my opinion is not a starting goaltender in the NHL but it looks like he splits with Reimer? Im not sure and don’t care to look up stats on Mrazik because let’s be honest, he sucks. Remember what I said about Carolina wanting this matchup? I can guarantee you that James Reimer definitely isn’t. The Bruins have broken that kid’s brain and the Hockey God’s have not been kind to him when matched up against the Black and Gold so we will see. Second biggest factor is going to be defense. I know it’s cliche to say but it’s true. These teams have scoring power by the truck load and all the boys are buzzing. It’s going to come down to who can block shots, break up rushes and turn the puck up the ice quicker for an offensive opportunity. I have a feeling that once the scoring begins, it is not going to end and both teams will never truly be out of a game so a full sixty miles is mandatory. Anything less than that and it’s going to be a quick and easy series for one of these clubs. Game 1 is at 8pm tonight, I will be live tweeting (@dotts27) and full post game analysis tomorrow? Maybe tonight? Turn those notifications on because you never know when your favorite Bruins blogger is going to drop fire on you.
