There have been some excellent college football games to watch this season but I’m not sure that any of them can compare to the Clemson vs Notre Dame rematch that is about to go down in the ACC Championship Game. Usually, I would write Notre Dame off in a game like this but for whatever reason, the Fighting Irish haven’t fallen for the classic “trap” game that usually eats their College Football Playoff hopes alive and they are playing for their first ever ACC Title.
This game will have a massive impact on the way that the College Football Playoff shakes out. If Notre Dame wins, they will be ranked two or better, they could potentially leapfrog Alabama if the showing is good enough and if they can prove that they can beat a Clemson team with Trevor Lawrence this time around. This could push Clemson entirely out of the CFP and open a spot for a team like Texas A&M. Two losses on the season to a highly-ranked team seems like an unfair way to miss out on the CFP, but the selection committee has done crazier things.
If Clemson wins this game, things could really get interesting. Never before in a college football season have two teams played each other three different times, it is practically unheard of. But this very well could happen if Clemson takes down Notre Dame. The most likely outcome of this would be Notre Dame staying or moving to number two and Clemson staying or moving to number three. That means these two would find themselves going at it for the third time this year in the CFP Semi-Final game.
This would be the ultimate way to determine a series winner in a season, unlike anything we have ever seen go down before. I for one would be a huge fan of this shaking out and think it would be the most brilliant way you could ever possibly market a game.
The last time out, Notre Dame took down the Tigers in an overtime thriller where 87 points were scored and the Irish mobbed the field despite the presence of a global pandemic. There is a red flag and asterisks on that game though as Clemson was without their starting quarterback and best player Trevor Lawrence who will be playing in this game. Notre Dame must prove that they can take down Clemson when they are at their best.
ACC Championship Players to Watch:
Clemson, Travis Ettiene: One of the best running backs in the nation was shut down by the Irish last time out, rushing for just 28 yards on 18 carries. If Notre Dame can limit him, they can limit Lawrence and they can help stall the offense.
Notre Dame, Ian Book: Ever since Ian Book became the QB at Notre Dame, we have been waiting for greatness. We saw a flash of that in the last game against Clemson. If he wants to truly etch himself into Irish lore, this is the game to do it in.
ACC Championship Prediction:
Clemson 41 Notre Dame 38
