It isn’t often that two teams in the same division play each other in Week 17 to take the last spot in a Wild Card race. But here we are and that’s what’s happening with the Los Angeles Rams and the Arizona Cardinals (kind of.) The Rams and the Cardinals both have spots in the Wild Card at the moment but that could change. The Rams will make the playoffs if they win or the Bears lose. The Cardinals can make the playoffs by beating the Rams OR tying the Rams combined with a Bears loss. If the Cardinals lose, the Bears are in.
So the Cardinals have a lot more on the line, but they are catching a break in this game. It seemed like Kyler Murray would be a game-time decision after he took a vicious hit on the last offensive play of the game last week, but he is practicing this week and he suited up on Wednesday, a very positive sign for a team that relies heavily on their starting quarterback to get the offense jump started. The other thing they have going for them is that Jared Goff underwent thumb surgery on Monday and is most likely out for the contest. The Rams will also be down Cooper Kupp who was placed on the COVID-19 list so he will be missing in action as well.
The Cardinals have played the Rams once this season and they lost that contest by a score of 38-28. Historically, the Rams are a team that beat up the Cards and over the last 10 games between these two, the Rams have won eight of those matchups. The Cardinals have won two of their last three games but the loss that they suffered to the 49ers last week was nothing short of horrible and they didn’t look good for a second. If Kyler isn’t healthy and Arizona is unable to get the running game going against a very good defensive front, they could still have troubles.
Cardinals vs Rams Players to Watch For:
Arizona Cardinals,Larry Fitzgerald: Fitz is the greatest athlete in Arizona history and we have no idea when his last game may be. There have been talks that his last season would be coming during each of the last three but this game could be it. He has a knack for showing up in the big moments for the Cardinals and his dedication to this franchise should be enough motivation for the Cardinals to grab a win on Sunday. Fitz is a top-3 wide receiver of all-time and he deserves one last playoff run before he hangs his Hall of Fame career up.
Los Angeles Rams, John Wolford: This is a little scary that the Rams don’t have a better backup quarterback, but Wolford is the guy. He is best known for being the Arizona Hotshots quarterback in the Alliance of American Football and just about nothing else. Maybe he will shock us or he will fall flat on his face.
Cardinals vs Rams Prediction:
The Rams are getting a huge break with the Rams injuries and will steal a win to get into the postseason.
