My 2020 Resolution Was to Play More Video Games
At the beginning of 2020, I had a list of 182 video games that I owned but I haven’t actually played yet (this isn’t even including sequels.) So I decided to make YouTube content out of it, trying to play through the games I already had and making mini-reviews of each completed game. I have no completed a full year of this challenge and through the last 12 months, I have completed 42 games from my list. So let’s look at some of what I played, and how that whole process went.
The Video Games
I often had a hard time choosing what I wanted to play each month, and because I wanted to make content out of it, I often (but not always) chose shorter games, so I could get through more at a time.
I finished the following games this year.
A King’s Tale: Final Fantasy XV
Uncharted: Golden Abyss
Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Super Mario World
In Space We Brawl
The Awesome Advntures of Captain Spirit
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Darksiders 2 Deathinitive Edition
Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Persona 4 Golden
Horizon Zero Dawn
Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap
SuperHot: Mind Control Delete
Burly Men at Sea
Saint’s Row: Gat Out of Hell
No More Heroes: Heroes’ Paradise
Mighty No. 9
Street Fighter V
HiveSwap: Act 1
Old Man’s Journey
Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late
Another World 20th anniversary
I would frequently ask friends and family what I should play next, and more often than not, I ignored them and chose something completely different.
I played some really good games this year, but I also played some not as good games. I’d like to focus on the ones that really stood out and stuck with me.
First, is The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild. I mean, what hasn’t already been said about this game? The combat is awesome, I loved the dungeons, and a switch to an open world was incredible. Also, you can try to fight the final boss right after the tutorial bit. I wouldn’t recommend it, but it’s just neat that it’s even an option.
I finally beat Super Mario World from the Super Nintendo for the first time. I loved this game! It’s the first game that I have a memory of ever playing and now I can say that I’ve finished it. It plays like what you’d expect from a Mario game at this point, but that doesn’t make it boring by any means.
Shovel Knight was a really cute, somewhat challenging, action platformer where you play as a knight armed with a shovel. I loved it, and I’m going to play it again at some point. I can’t put into words how much I enjoyed this game.
Horizon Zero Dawn was my favorite game that I played all year. Imagine Zelda, meets Uncharted, meets Far Cry and that still doesn’t quite sum it up correctly, but that’s the best I’ve got. This Is an incredible game where you battle robot animals and other people. It took me a while to get used to using the bow as my primary weapon, but once I got a hang of it, I was on a roll.
Persona 4 Golden is a game that I’ve heard good things about for years now, and I finally tried it out. This is a turn-based RPG that adds elements from visual novels, like character relationships, going to class, joining school clubs and sports. This is like a dark murder mystery and I personally put 90 hours into this game.
I also did a complete stream playthrough of 2 games that never went on my list, but I’d be a liar if I didn’t mention them here.
First I played Final Fantasy 7 remake. I’ve never played the original FF7, so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but this was a blast. I’m really into the action RPG combat and the story had me at the edge of my seat for a lot of it. I skipped most of the side quests, so I intend to go back at some point and play through more of the optional stuff.
I also played The Last of Us Part II. I know a lot of people didn’t like this game, but I sure did. It isn’t without its flaws, and I’ll definitely say more about that another time, but I did want to mention that the second half of my gameplay was plagued by horrible glitches that I was going to hold against the game, but it turns out that it was an issue with my hard drive, so I have apologized to the game for blaming it.
After knocking 42 games off of my list I’ve decided to continue this series, but with a new home. My personal YouTube channel is where I post comedy sketches and comedic reviews, and though I loved hosting the ‘Games I Played’ series on there, it didn’t fit in with my other content, so I will continue making these videos exclusively for Cruel Fan Gaming.
I look forward to bringing you more gaming content each month. My list of games I’ve yet to play can be found here.
So let me know what you think I should try next.
