The biggest surprise last night is that it was a pretty good fight for a little while. Canelo Alvarez, an 8-to-1 favorite, built up an early lead on Billy Joe Saunders. BJS crawled back into the fight in the middle rounds – and then he got too confident. He put his hands down and forgot who he was fighting – and who he is. He isn’t Roy Jones Jr. in his prime. Jones could toy with the best contenders with his hands by his side. Saunders can’t – especially against one of the best – if not THE best – pound-for-pound fighters in the world.
Saunders’ brash decision left him in the hospital with multiple fractures to his orbital bones. While Saunders could be praised for his bravery, he paid the price for not respecting Alvarez’s power in front of a record-breaking crowd at AT&T Stadium in Texas.
Boos from the pro-Alvarez crowd rained down on Saunders when he didn’t come out for round nine. It was an expected but disappointing response considering the injuries Saunders suffered. Watch the highlights here:
